Swimming at TSWPC

Early Development to Club Membership

Tyldesley Swimming & Water Polo Club and the Pelican Centre are partners in the Aquatic Pathway delivered by the Pool and the Club, many of the club coaches, teachers and lifeguards teach at the pool, from National Plan for Teaching Swimming Stages 1 – 6 and Stage 7 the Pelican Academy.

Once swimmers commence the Pelican Academy their progress is continued to be monitored on a regular basis.  As the swimmers progress through the Pelican Academy they are then identified to be invited to attend 1 club sessions per week (1 hour).

The Pelican Centre and the club encourage swimmers to continue their development by having the opportunity to attend 2 sessions per week.

Once the swimmer makes the decision to move from the Pelican Academy to the club they are then registered as a member of Swim England (National Governing Body), the swimmers progress through the club swimming sections of Link Development; Junior Development and Swim Team.

If the swimmer wishes to further develop their swimming to become a competitive swimmer then the club can introduce them to a local swimming squad.

The swimmers progress is monitored continually and the club also have Quarterly Assessments, these assessments give the Teachers and Coaches further information on the child’s progress.  Promotion from each lane and group is also based on attendance, ability, application, attitude and completion of the quarterly assessments.

If you require further information about the Swimming Section then please email Diane Stafford   or 01942 891902.

Development to Club Swimming

Once swimmers commence to the Pelican Academy their progress is still monitored on a regular basis.

The swimmers as they progress through the Pelican Academy are identified to further develop their swimming parthway and are invited to attend 1 club session per week.

Once the swimmers join the club they progress through the club swimming groups of Link Development; Junior Development and Swim Team.

Link Development

This is the group that swimmers join when they come into the initial stages of the club from Pelican Academy.

The 4 strokes are continued to be perfected including Starts and Turns to ensure the Swim England standards are maintained. The swimmers are also introduced to basic work with Pace/Lane Clock.

Session Times

Tuesday          7.00 - 8.00 pm

Thursday         7.00 - 8.00 pm

Junior Development

This group continues to develop the swimmer’s strokes, techniques, starts and turns inaccordancce with Swim England standards

Once the swimmer is promoted to Lane 3 the club will encourage the swimmer to further develop their swimming by increasing their water time.  The club will then discuss with the parents how to access the extra water time by attending Squad training.

Session Times

Monday               7.30 - 8.30 pm

Thursday             8.00 - 9.30 pm

Swim Team

Swimmers are now developing athletic abilities in their chosen sport, strokes and techniques will continue to be developed, however the intensity of the training becomes more difficult – the increases in difficulty can either be by the pace of the swim, the distance of the swim or a combination of both as the athlete develops.

The swimming is evolved around the 200m IM (Individual Medley) so as the swimmer can develop all 4 strokes and train and compete in all 4.   As swimmers grow and they develop physically this changes their natural ability and personal preference towards certain strokes and distances.

At this early stage of the swimmers journey all strokes are still trained, taught and coached.

Swimmers in this group are encouraged to attend Squad training to increase their water time.

Session Times

Monday               8.30 - 9.30 pm

Thursday             8.00 - 9.30 pm

Future Development

Once a swimmer has made the decision to develop and become a competitive swimmer then increasing their training is essential for this development.

There are a network of local training squads that can provide additional time and development the club cannot provide.

If you require further information about Squad Training then please speak to Diane Stafford or 01942 891902

If a swimmer decides not to become a competitive swimmer then the club do have a water polo section, if you require further information on water polo then please speak to Lee Toone  or 07813 612607.

Some swimmers may decide to to become a poolside helper, teacher, coach or lifeguard - if you would like more information about volunteering at the club then please email Diane Stafford or Tom Pridding
